Entry-Level Software Hiring Is Thin. Your Resume Still Needs to Show Real Engineering Work.

The entry-level software market is not dead, but it is less forgiving of resumes that read like course catalogs. When employers can ask for more experience, a skills list and three project titles rarely make a new graduate's value obvious. Your resume has to expose the engineering inside the work you have actually done.
Tech experience requirements tightened during the hiring slowdown. Among U.S. tech postings that specified an experience requirement, Indeed Hiring Lab found that the share seeking at least five years rose from 37 percent in Q2 2022 to 42 percent in Q2 2025.[1] That pressure does not mean a new graduate should imitate a senior engineer. It means the resume must make early evidence easier to evaluate.
Long-term demand has not vanished. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment for software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers to grow 15 percent from 2024 to 2034.[2] Durable occupational demand does not make the current entry-level search easier. It clarifies the assignment: show enough concrete engineering judgment to compete for the openings that remain.
Show the work behind the tool names
An entry-level software engineer resume should prove five things wherever the evidence allows:
- Problem: What specific behavior, failure, or user need existed?
- Decision: What approach did you choose, and what constraint shaped it?
- Verification: How did you test, measure, or review the result?
- Collaboration: Who gave feedback, consumed the work, or shared ownership?
- Consequence: What became faster, safer, clearer, or possible afterward?

Tool names show exposure. These five signals show how you approached engineering work.
You will not have all five in every bullet. Two or three specific signals beat a stack list followed by "built an app." In NACE's Job Outlook 2025 survey, responding employers commonly looked for evidence of problem solving and teamwork on student resumes.[3]

If you have an internship, lead with what you shipped or improved
An internship is your strongest work context only when the bullets reveal what happened there. Put education near the top if graduation timing matters, then lead the body with experience.

Recommended order: Education, technical experience, selected projects, skills.
Under the internship, avoid spending the first bullet describing the company or team. Start with your contribution.
Weak: Worked with the platform team using Python, Docker, and AWS.
Stronger: Traced intermittent timeout failures to an unbounded retry path, added a capped backoff policy and integration coverage, and documented the failure case for the platform team's on-call guide.
That version does not pretend the intern owned the platform. It shows debugging, a bounded change, verification, and a shared artifact. Use one or two projects afterward to prove a different capability.
Without an internship, build an evidence-first project section
Projects are not substitutes for professional tenure. They can still prove that you encountered constraints, changed your mind, tested behavior, and finished something another person can inspect.
Recommended order: Short role-focused summary if useful, selected engineering projects, education, other experience, skills.

Weak: Built a full-stack task manager using React, Node.js, and PostgreSQL.
Stronger: Added optimistic updates to a React task board, reproduced stale-write failures under concurrent edits, and introduced version checks plus integration tests for the Node API.
The second bullet gives an interviewer useful follow-ups: Why optimistic updates? How did the failure appear? What did the tests cover? Good evidence creates a technical conversation you can sustain.
Link GitHub only when the profile or repository helps a reviewer validate the claim. Pin the relevant repository, write a useful README, explain setup, and remove secrets or broken demos. Use the GitHub resume decision guide before spending valuable header space on a noisy profile.
Make every section support the same target
Your skills section should summarize evidence already visible elsewhere. If a backend role emphasizes APIs, databases, and production debugging, those should connect to internship or project bullets. Do not let a long list of languages pull attention away from three tools you can defend deeply.
Nontechnical work can support the story. Customer support, lab work, tutoring, and campus leadership may demonstrate investigation, communication, prioritization, or reliable execution. Keep the connection factual. Candidates without a traditional degree can apply the same principle using the no-degree resume guide.
Before sending, audit each prominent claim: Can you explain the problem, your contribution, what failed, how you checked the result, and what you would change next? If not, tighten the wording or choose stronger evidence.
